National Institute for Marine Research and Development “Grigore Antipa” under the NUCLEU SMART-BLUE Programme (grant number PN23230201), funded by the Romanian Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digitization, investigates the feasibility of acclimatising and reintroducing the European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) along the Romanian Black Sea coast. As a keystone species, O. edulis plays a crucial role in enhancing biodiversity, improving water quality, and stabilizing coastal ecosystems. By evaluating its potential for successful reintroduction, this study contributes to broader ecosystem restoration efforts.

Historically present along the Romanian coast, Ostrea edulis disappeared due to unknown factors. The study began with the laboratory acclimation of approximately 2,000 oysters to the region’s lower salinity conditions (16–18 PSU). A major milestone was reached last summer with their successful deployment into the open sea using SEAPA cages.
Following deployment, scientific monitoring is assessing survival and growth rates. Preliminary results indicate promising survival and growth, even under challenging conditions, including low salinity (13 PSU) and high temperatures (30°C) recorded last summer.
Building on these findings, the research will continue this year with the deployment of 5,000 additional individuals in new locations.
